About Brahm Friedlander

Brahm Friedlander in his studioBrahm Friedlander's work involves the turning of sculptural as well as functional wood objects. He manipulates the surfaces of the turnings by carving, leafing (gold & copper), burning, sand blasting and painting (usually not all at once). Lately he has been experimenting with manipulating copper covered surfaces to produce interesting and unique patina effects. Some of this current work is shown on his gallery page.

Born in Montreal, Brahm was introduced to wood turning in high school. After completion of undergraduate work he went to Thunder Bay, Ontario, to do graduate work in psychology, but found that profession unfulfilling. As a self taught guitar maker and repairer his work is in Fine Woodworking Design Book 3, but he gradually moved into cabinetmaking and millwork. His last major work done in Thunder Bay, Ontario was the millwork, cabinetry, furniture and architectural sculpture in the new visitors centre at Old Fort William.

Moving to the Owen Sound area near Walter's Falls brought him the opportunity to pursue full-time his first love: wood turning. Fine Woodworking's Design Book 7 also contains a picture of one of his large hollow turnings. In Owen Sound Brahm's work is sold at the Tom Thomson Art Gallery; in Ottawa at Snapdragon; and the Walter's Falls Art Show in Walter's Falls, August 23-25, 2002 (see map).
