SAFE TREES

Trees. Can we love them too much? Every one of the trees (or shrubs)in this cycle of photos is adored by their owners who want their "babies" to make it through the Canadian winter.

Why "protect" trees at all? Many of these trees are non-native and not suited to snow and ice. I'm for planting native species and letting nature take her course. That is my bias. Because I don't like to see us get further abstracted from what is natural by planting out of zone or single specimens without their companion plants to protect them against the elements.

But, I do acknowledge the emerging art of tree wrapping and shrub covering is probably here to stay. Some make beautiful sculptures.
