WORKSHOPS
Sandra Noble Goss
For over 25 years I have taught jewellery making to adults and children. My teaching experience includes summer programs at Haliburton School of the Arts, a yearly elective program for third year jewellery students at Georgian College, Barrie, and body decoration and introductory jewellery to children and teenagers in public and high schools through the Ontario Arts Council "Arts in Education" program. My workshops can run from one evening to a week or two. Several are appropriate as weekend workshops.
ADULTS & JEWELLERY STUDENTS:
- Married Metal Techniques: I teach students to create designs and patterns in metal using different coloured metals (such as copper, brass, bronze and sterling silver). The techniques taught include married metal, multi-metal lamination, twisted wire lamination and mokume gane.
- Patina:
I use cupric nitrate to patinate copper, brass and bronze. Students learn how to create a range of coloured finishes from bright turquoise (verdigris) to green, brown and black on these metals.
- Non-Acid Etching of Copper, Brass and Bronze:
Ferric Chloride will safely etch copper, brass and bronze. In an etching course I instruct students in various methods of applying resist, using photocopied images, the etching process, patination finishes and cleaning and polishing. This technique is useful for not only jewellers but also for printmakers, metalsmiths, and bookbinders.
- Gold Leaf:
High karat gold leaf can be easily applied to patinated metals, textured metals, wood, ceramic, plaster and plastic to produce a lush and rich finish. This course would cover the use of various sizes, methods of application and protective coatings.

ELEMENTARY & HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:
- Wire Jewellery:
Working with simple tools, copper, brass and aluminum wire offer children an introduction to working with metal. A course based on wire work is appropriate for Grades 6 and up. Students can design pins, necklaces, earrings and bracelets with wire.
- Body Decoration:
I teach children basic jewellery-making and metalworking skills through a course on Body Decoration. This course encourages children to work larger and more boldly and to think about the reasons humans decorate their bodies. Children are encouraged to use other materials and found objects in addition to metal.
- Non-Acid Etching:
Designing and making of an etched cuff bracelet is a good introduction to metal and jewellery-making for Grade 9 - 13 students. Students learn to think about design, how to apply various resists and how to form and polish a metal bracelet. Copper, brass or bronze may be used.
I recently taught a 12-day Arts in Education workshop at the National Ballet School in Toronto, Canada. You can see pictures on this Jewellery Project page.
