Stephen Hogbin:
The Process of CommissioningIf you are interested in commissioning a work from Stephen Hogbin, this is the basic process...
![]()
- Approach the artist with an idea of what you need. Generally it should fit within the scope of the artist's production. And don't forget that it's okay to ask questions!
![]()
- Next comes a discussion of the possibilities and the potential, with further discussion of a budget range.
![]()
- Then a concept design is prepared, with an estimate, so you know what it's going to look like and how much it's going to cost. If the project demands extensive research, there will be a design fee at this stage.
![]()
- After more discussion, and if there is agreement on the project, delivery dates are established.
![]()
- There is a down payment before any materials are purchased and any work starts.
![]()
- For larger projects, a payment may be required at the halfway mark. Photographs of work in progress or a visit to the studio can be arranged.

- For a first commission, the artist would require payment before delivery. For second and subsequent commissions, payment would be due after delivery. The artist retains the right to photograph and exhibit the project for public viewing.
![]()
- The best projects occur through a thoughtful process, carefully maintained, over reasonable time frames and with an appropriate budget.
